Well this was a fun assignment!
Last year I was introduced to an amazing art prize run by Blarney Books and Art in Port Fairy. The Biblio Art Prize, in it's 16th year, is an exhibition of artwork inspired by contemporary Australian fiction.
After being given a title to read, artists created artwork that demonstrated a clear connection with the book. I was thrilled to be selected as a finalist to be exhibited in their show, and even more excited to know my painting sold.
My book was Ghost Cities by Siang Lu. Inspired by vacant megacities of China, it's a novel with parallel story lines between modern times and an ancient Emperor. The landscape (ping ping went my landscape artist brain!) was evocative and featured a sentient mountain (ping ping ping went my dreamscape artist brain!).
I created Mountain Began To Sing His Ancient Song. Influenced by traditional Chinese ink paintings.
The Biblio Art Prize exhibition runs during summer until 28 February.
"A sentient mountain learns the songs of the villagers, gradually understanding itself through their stories and emotions. He became the keeper of the memories and grows to understand his place through their music. Mountain, who knew nothing and could not stand to be alone, began to sing the folk songs of the villagers, and recognised his name in the breeze.
Like Mountain, I've created a landscape layered with memories and stories."
